As we celebrate Juneteenth, the Mayor Harold Washington Legacy Committee joins communities across the nation in honoring June 19, 1865—the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas finally learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of justice. It is a time to reflect on the sacrifices and struggles of those who came before us while recommitting ourselves to advancing equality, opportunity, and civic engagement for future generations.
As an organization dedicated to preserving the legacy of Mayor Harold Washington, we recognize that the freedoms we celebrate today were secured through the courage, determination, and collective action of countless individuals who believed in a more just and inclusive society.
Today, we honor our ancestors, celebrate our culture, and renew our commitment to building stronger communities where every voice is heard, valued, and empowered. May this Juneteenth inspire us all to continue the work of freedom, justice, and unity.
